Avigilon Alta Open for Android is a «business security app» that turns your smartphone into a «touchless entry» credential, negating the need for key cards or key fobs at places of employment relying on Avigilon Alta Access Control.
How ”Touchless Entry” Work in Actuality
The app is a digital key that sends three types of signals to a compatible door reader. These signals are Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi and LTE. This three-way linking system means that if one signalling method fails, others pick up the slack. So, our tech isn’t as vulnerable to interference like single-signal systems. Now you can unlock the door by merely pressing a button inside the app. Additionally, you can wave your hand close to the reader (“Wave to Unlock”). Also, you can unlock the door by simply walking up to it with your phone in your pocket. The final choice, Proximity Unlock, is the real winner here. You don’t have to touch anything or get your phone out.
You’ll need an email invitation from your company administrator, who registers your device as an OK credential. When you agree and give permission for Bluetooth, location and notifications, you can walk hands-free in secure areas. Through the app, you may also manage the digital guest passes for short-term guests to access restricted spaces without physical badges. In case of emergency, authorized users can lockdown via their phone.
The Permission and Power Trade-Off
But keep in mind, they need to constantly access your phone’s Bluetooth, location data, and cellular connection in the background. The app clearly states that not granting these permissions and setting aggressive battery-saving modes will affect its performance. It means that the wave to unlock and proximity detection may not work or may partially work. Some users may find this constant access to devices somewhat intrusive, although the developer claims that no information is shared with any third parties.
It makes sense that this has almost no sort of offline capability given how it relies on cloud-connected access control, but it does mean you are out of luck when connectivity drops. As clientapp is already being used for Avigilon Alta Access Control hardware and cloud services, this is not a standalone solution. People or organizations with dissimilar systems won’t benefit in any way.
Who Should Install This
You can use the app free of charge without advertisements or any in-app purchases; the real cost is your employment’s «Avigilon reader integration» and infrastructure. The app offers high reliability when the permissions are properly set up to be able to use the app as per user reports. Users find it very convenient to walk through doors without even stopping their step. Users frequently complain that the background activity of the app drains their battery. Further, their phone settings conflict with the app in case of a sync issue.
The Avigilon Alta Open works well in demanding environments such as hospitals, corporate campuses, or multi-tenant, or office buildings. It competes with HID Mobile Access and Kisi but has triple-signal redundancy and tight cloud integration to differentiate itself. Avigilon Alta hardware is already in use by your workplace and you’re comfortable letting us have the queuing permissions this “door unlock app” is for real convenience. No more credential to carry. Just don’t expect it to work perfectly if you restrict certain background access or toggle the battery saver often.
